Breeding Costing Tool Software

The Breeding Costing Tool is a stand-alone sotware developped by the sorghum team at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation at The University of Queensland and is the Copyright © 2020 The University Of Queensland.

The Breeding Program Costing Tool software allows users to estimate the cost of crop breeding and its associated research activities and to help breeders make decisions about resource allocation.

The costing tool is designed to calculate the cost of running a crop breeding activity, or an entire breeding pipeline, using the prices, costs and salaries from a single year.

Applications of the costing tool software include:

  • Identifying high cost areas of breeding programs for mechanization
  • Conducting “What If?” scenarios and evaluating the cost and resource implications of the different scenarios (eg increasing numbers of trials, implementing partial replication)
  • Costing fee for service activities (eg pathology screening or trials)
  • As a basis for building a breeding program budget
  • Building business cases for purchasing specific capital items Sharing databases of costs with management

The program comes with a trial database and a set of video help files and is available for download, free of charge.

Technical Requirements

The Breeding Costing Tool runs on Windows 7 and above.

The download file will be a zip file so you will require to unzip it first.

The Breeding Costing Tool installation files contains the Crystal Reports runtime and the Dot Net Framework 4.5.1. and you shouldn’t need to add them separately. However, if the installation is not successful, you may require to install the Crystal Reports runtime and the Dot Net Framework 4.5.1. manually.

Note

It may take a little bit of time (few minutes) to generate the download file as it is around 222 MB in size. Please be patient and refrain from clicking the Download button mulitple times.

It is best to use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome to download the file as they handle the time request better than Microsoft Edge.

Installation

Once you have downloaded the file, extract it wherever you want on your computer. For example, it is best to first create a folder called Costing Tool and extract the files there.

Double click the file BreedingProgramCostingToolSetup.msi to run the installation of the Breeding Costing Tool. Follow instructions.

To install the Help Files, unzip the file called Help Files.zip. Navigate where you have extracted the files and double click on the file called index.html which will give you a menu of all the help files and videos.
